Shri Virbhadra Singh is the Honourable Minister of Steel, Government of India. He is one of the senior most Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) in the 15th Lok Sabha. A strong grass root politician, he has been the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for five terms. Shri Virbhadra Singh has been elected to the Lok Sabha five times – in 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980 and in 2009. A respected Parliamentarian, he has been holding various key ministerial responsibilities. Among them are, Dy. Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Govt. of India from December 1976 to March 1977; Minister of State, for Industries, Govt. of India from 1982 to 1983. Shri Virbhadra Singh has been the leader of the opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly from March 1998 to March 2003. Mr Naveen Jindal is a Member of Parliament, a successful entrepreneur, and sports enthusiast. An MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas, USA in 1992, Mr Jindal has been a member of the Lok Sabha since 2004, now in his second term from Kurukshetra constituency in the state of Haryana.

Mr. Naveen Jindal is the Executive Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Jindal Steel & Power Limited. The company is a part of the US $ 12 Billion O.P Jindal Group. He is also the Chairman of Jindal Power Limited, which is running 1,000 MW O. P. Jindal Thermal Power Plant at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. JSPL became the only Indian company to feature in Boston Consulting Group’s Top Ten 2010 Value Creators in Global Rankings and was awarded the Forbes Asia’s ‘Fabulous 50’ international award in 2009.

H E Peter Varghese
Australian High Commissioner to India

Peter Varghese took up his position as Australian High Commissioner to India in August 2009.

Prior to his posting he was for five and half years the Director General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA) in Canberra. This is a Secretary-level statutory office reporting directly to the Australian Prime Minister. ONA provides the Prime Minister and the National Security Committee of Cabinet with assessments of international political, strategic and economic developments affecting Australia’s national interests. It is also responsible for coordinating and evaluating Australia’s foreign intelligence activities.

From June to December 2003 Mr Varghese worked in the Prime Minister’s personal office as the senior foreign and defence policy adviser to then Prime Minister John Howard.

Mr Varghese is a career officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade which he joined in 1979. He has served in Vienna (1980-83), Washington (1985-88), as Minister (Political) in Tokyo (1994) and as High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-2002).

In Canberra, Mr Varghese has held a wide range of positions, including Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (2003) and several stints working on disarmament and arms control issues. In 1996 and 1997 he led the drafting team which produced Australia’s first ever White Paper on foreign affairs and trade. Mr Varghese also headed the department’s personnel branch (1991-2). From 1998-99 he was seconded to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as head of the international division.

Mr Varghese was born in Kenya in 1956 to Kerala-born parents who went to teach in Kenya soon after they married. He migrated to Australia as a young child. Mr Varghese went to school in Brisbane and is a graduate and university medalist in History from the University of Queensland. He is married to Margaret, who is on leave from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. They have one adult son.

Dr J J Irani

Tata Sons

Born on 2nd June 1936, Dr. Irani obtained a degree in M.Sc. (Geology) from Nagpur University in 1958. M.Met.  in 1960 and Ph.D. in 1963 from the University of Sheffield, U.K. He began his career in 1963 as a Senior Scientific Officer at the BISRA, Sheffield where he rose to the position of Head, Physical Metallurgy Division. On return to India in 1968 he joined The Tata Iron and Steel Company Ltd. (TISCO), now Tata Steel, as Assistant to Director, Research & Development, whereafter he was appointed General Superintendent in 1978, General Manager in 1979, President in 1985 and Managing Director in 1992. After holding the CEO's office for almost a decade, he retired as Managing Director of Tata Steel in 2001.  Presently, he continues to be a Director on the Board of Tata Steel.

He is the Chairman of the Society and Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, Council Member of the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Member of the United Nation’s Global Compact Board and a Trustee of the World Wild Fund for Nature – India (WWF – India). Dr. Irani was the National President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 1992-93. He was the Co-Chairman of the Indo-British Partnership during 1993-1998. He was made a “Paul Harris Fellow” by the Rotary International in 1977, and a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions International Foundation in 1993. He has been the President of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) during 1985-86, All India Management Association (AIMA) during 1988-89 and Asian Association of Management Organisations (AAMO) during 2004-2007. He was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Xavier Labor Relations Institute, Jamshedpur (1993-2003).  He was also the Chairman of the India-Australia Council.

Dr. Irani is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) Government of India, the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) and also of the Expert Group constituted by the Planning Commission, Government of India, to prepare a Strategy for a Low Carbon Economy for India. He was Chairman of the Expert Committee set up by the Government to draft the new Companies Act, and was a member of the Expert Committee set up by the Government for recommending a roadmap for the Coal Sector in India.  He was also involved in the working groups for Iron and Steel for the 6th, 7th and 8th National Five-Year Plans. He was a member of the Duke of Edinburgh Conference in 1980 (held in Canada).

Besides Tata Steel, Dr. Irani is a Director on the Boards of several Corporates including Tata Sons Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., BOC (India) Ltd., Electrosteel Castings Ltd., Repro India Ltd. He is Chairman of Tata Refractories Ltd., TRF Ltd. and Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd. He is a Member of the Advisory Council of Citigroup India and of the Advisory Committee of NICCO group. He was a Director of the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India, and was also on the Boards of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and IDBI Bank.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Metals, Institution of Engineers, All India Management Association, Institute of Standards Engineers, Indian Academy of Sciences and Institution of Industrial Managers.

In 1993, the University of Sheffield conferred upon him the Honorary Degree of “Doctor of Metallurgy”, and in 2004 The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) conferred on him the Degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa. The Royal Academy of Engineering, London, at its Annual General Body Meeting held on 10th July 1996, elected Dr. Irani as a Foreign Member and he is amongst the few Indians who have been bestowed with this honour.

The Ministry of Steel and Mines awarded him the Metallurgist of the Year Award in 1974, and the inaugural National Metallurgist Award in 1997 for his extraordinary achievements in the field of metallurgical industry. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award 2008 instituted by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He is the recipient of “Steel Man of the Year 1990” award, Asian Productivity Medal 1993-94, the Indian Institute of Metals’ prestigious “Platinum Medal” in 1988 (this medal is the highest award given by the IIM for outstanding contributions made to the metallurgical profession and industry), the Michael John Memorial Gold Medal for the year 1998 (for fostering harmonious employee-management relations in Industry), the Qimpro Platinum Standard in 2000, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber’s Juran Quality Medal for the year 2001 (for his role as a statesman for quality), the Ernst & Young’s Lifetime Achievement Award, 2001 (for entrepreneurial success), the All India Management Association’s Eighth JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award in 2003, the ICSI Life Time Achievement Award in 2006 (for translating excellence in Corporate Governance into reality). He has been conferred with the World Zarathushti Award for Excellence in Business at the Seventh World Zoroastrian Congress at Houston, USA in 2000, and Indian National Academy of Engineering’s Life Time Contribution Award in Engineering in 2002.  He is the recipient of the Twelfth Willy Korf Steel Vision Award instituted by The World Steel Dynamics and American Metal Market.

In 1997, Queen Elizabeth II conferred on him a honorary Knighthood (KBE), for his contributions to Indo-British Trade and Co-operation.

In 2007 he was honoured by the President of India who conferred on him the award of “Padma Bhushan” for his services to Trade and Industry in the country.

Dr. Irani is an avid Stamp Collector, cricket enthusiast, has been a great promoter of sports and education in the City of Jamshedpur, and a committed environmentalist.

Mr C S Verma


Mr. Chandra Shekhar Verma is Chairman, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) since June 2010.
Mr. Verma has also taken over as the Chairman of International Coal Ventures Limited (ICVL) – a Joint Venture of five leading Public Sector Enterprises viz. SAIL, CIL, RINL, NMDC & NTPC formed with special approval of Govt. of India for acquisition of coal assets in overseas territories.

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Verma was Director (Finance) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), India’s largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in the energy-related/infrastructure sector. 
Spanning nearly 29 years, Mr. Verma’s career profile also covers stints as Director (Finance) of ITI Ltd., Group General Manager of Indian Railway Finance Corporation, and General Manager of Delhi Stock Exchange, besides experience of working in a Financial Institution for about nine years.

Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and of the Institute of Cost & Works Accountants of India, Mr. Verma is a Commerce post-graduate with a Master’s degree in Business Administration and Bachelor’s degree in Law & Legislatures.  He also currently chairs the ‘National Committee on Steel’ of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for 2010-11.

Mr Partha S Bhattacharyya

Coal India Ltd

Mr. Bhattacharyya, MSc (Physics) from Jadavpur University and a Cost Accountant joined Coal India as a Management Trainee in 1977 and rose to become its Chairman in October 2006. In his tenure, CIL has grown from strength to strength. Coal production increased from 343 million tonnes in FY 06 to 431 million tonnes in FY 10. The pre tax profits rose from Rs.8788 crores in FY 06 to Rs.13965 crores in FY 10. The post tax profits rose from Rs.5891 crores to Rs.9622 crores during this period. He has spearheaded a number of major strategic initiatives for opening coal washeries, new large underground mines, reopening abandoned UG mines, introducing a system of monitoring land reclamation in Opencast mines using Satellite imagery etc. He introduced Integrity Pact in high value procurements leading to increased transparency and speed.

In his tenure CIL secured higher empowerment by receiving Miniratna status in March 07 and Navaratna in October 2008. In Jan 2009, Mr. Bhattacharyya successfully concluded year long wage negotiation for 500,000 coal workers without loss of a single day of work. During his tenure, Mr Bhattacharyya placed Coal India on a global map by acquiring coal assets in Mozambique and initiating the process of creating strategic partnership with coal mining companies abroad.

On October 15, 2009, he received, on behalf of CIL, the coveted ‘SCOPE GOLD TROPHY AWARD’ for excellence and Outstanding Contribution to the Public Sector Management – Institutional Category 2007-08 from the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. Mr. Bhattacharyya was conferred the ‘CEO with HR Orientation’ award by Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bhutan during World HRD Congress in February 2010. On May 11, 2010, he was awarded the CII President’s Award. Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), a premier Management Institute of Kolkata, conferred ‘Distinguished Management Fellowship’ Award to Mr Bhattacharyya in a special programme held on 23rd July 2010. On the same day, the Jury and Council of Board Members of Employer Branding Institute, CMO Asia, Singapore conferred him the ‘CEO with HR Orientation’ Award in Singapore.   On 20th Aug 2010, Mr. Bhattacharyya was conferred the ‘Distinguished Fellowship’ award by the Institute of Directors, a premier institution of directors focusing of management issues.   Recently, CSIR nominated Mr. Bhattacharyya as the Chairman of the Research Council of Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), Dhanbad. On 13th Sept 10, CIL was conferred with two India Pride Awards 2010 -  ‘The Best Energy Sector Company’ and ‘CSR/Environment Protection and Conservation’ by Hon’ble Finance Minister of India.  World Brand Congress 2010 – Global Awards for Brand Excellence, in a function held on 23rd Nov 10 at Hotel Taj Lands End, Mumbai, conferred him with the ‘CEO of the Year’ award.  On 1st Dec 2010, Mr. Bhattacharyya was honoured  with the ‘CEO of the Year’ award by Dept of Public Enterprises, GoI in association with Indian Chamber of Commerce.  This award was given to him by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises at a Summit on ‘India Public Sector Agenda @ 2015’ organized on the occasion.

Before joining CIL as Chairman, Mr. Bhattacharyya was CMD of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL) from Nov 2003 to Sept 2006 when he turned around this perennially loss making company in 2005-06 with the company recording a profit of Rs.202 crores.   For this he received the ‘Chief Executive of the year 2005’ award by the Indian Institute of Materials Management in Nov 2005 and was honoured by the Citizens’ Forum of Dhanbad in February 2008.

While in BCCL, Mr. Bhattacharyya introduced sale of coal electronically, which was later extended to all Coal Companies.  This is a transparent internet based mode of sale of coal that enabled every consumer in the country to access coal supply.  CIL annually generates additional revenue over Rs.2000 crores on sale of 10% of its produce in this mode.

Before joining BCCL, he was Director (Finance) of Western Coalfields Ltd. from 2001 to 2003 where he introduced the Group gratuity scheme benefiting the company and its employees substantially.

In mid nineties, as Chief Finance Manager of CIL, Mr. Bhattacharyya developed a Financial Model for the company that was successfully used to secure approval of GOI to Capital Restructuring in 1996 and World Bank/JBIC loan of 1.06 Billion US Dollar that paved the way for emergence of CIL as a large profit making, tax and dividend paying PSE in the country. He introduced an advanced system for managing currency risks that has yielded substantial benefits for over a decade.

Mr. Bhattacharyya toured abroad extensively on various official assignments including five weeks at the World Bank. He completed with distinction an eight week programme at Harvard University in 1990, a two week Euro-money training at Surrey UK in 1998 and two week AMP at Cambridge University in 2006. He is a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Sciences and has also won the CEPM – PMA Honorary Fellowship award.

Mr. Bhattacharyya hails from a well educated freedom fighter’s family.  His father late Binoy Krishna Bhattacharyya, a doctor by profession, was an INA veteran and later an officer in the Indian Army.  His wife Indrani, a post graduate, is working as an officer in a leading nationalized bank.  His only son, Sayan a B.Tech from NIT, Suratkal is pursuing Masters Programme at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra.

Mr Suketu V Shah is Jt. Managing Director  of Mukand Ltd., India’s leading producer of specialty, stainless & alloy steels serving both the domestic and international markets such as the US,  Germany, U.K., France, Switzerland, Italy, Korea, Australia and Taiwan and many other countries.  The company is also a leading manufacturer of heavy machinery and bulk material handling equipment for cement, steel plants and ports.

Mr Shah’s other business interests include pharma and dairy.

Mr Shah did his undergrad from Mumbai and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980.  He worked with International Finance Corporation, Washington D.C. and American Express Bank in New York before returning to India to join his family business, of which he is the third generation.

Mr Shah is a past Chairman of the Young Presidents Organization, Bombay Chapter and was on the executive committee of the Harvard Business School Association of India.  He has been the Chairman of Western Regional Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and is now on the National Council of CII.  He is Chairman of the Alloy Steel Producers Association of India.  Mr Shah is also on the Board of UTV Sofware Communications Ltd., in which the Walt Disney company has a significant stake.

Mr Shah’s family is an old, established business family which has also been  actively  involved in politics.  He too has an abiding interest in it.  His other interests include Art & Music, Mountain climbing, Travel, Food, Politics, Writing and Badminton.

Mr Malay Mukherjee
Chief Executive Officer

Essar Steel Business Group

Mr Malay Mukherjee is the Chief Executive Officer of the Essar Steel Business Group. He has been associated with the group since 2009 and looks after global steel operations of the group spanning India, Canada, USA, the Middle East and Asia.

In a career spanning more than 40 years, he has led a variety of technical and commercial functions in the steel industry.

Prior to joining Essar, Mr. Mukherjee was a member of the Board of Directors of Arcelor Mittal. He joined Mittal Steel in 1993 as Executive Director of the company’s Mexican operations, where he subsequently became CEO. Following his tenure in Mexico, he moved to Kazakhstan in 1996 where he spent three years as the company’s CEO. He left Kazakhstan in 1999 to become President and CEO of Ispat Europe.

In 2001, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer, first of Ispat International and subsequently of Mittal Steel Company, following the merger between Ispat International, LNM Holdings and International Steel Group to create the world’s largest steel company. After the merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel in 2006, Mr. Mukherjee was appointed to the Group Management Board.

Prior to joining ArcelorMittal, Mr. Mukherjee spent many years with the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) with the assignment as Executive Director (Works) at the Bhilai Steel Plant, the largest integrated steel plant in India, prior to his departure to Ispat International.

Born on January 26, 1948, Mr. Mukherjee is an alumnus of IIT- Kharagpur and holds a master’s degree in mining from the USSR State Commission in Moscow.

He is a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences and a Life Member of the Indian Institute of Metals.

Mr Jayant Acharya

JSW Steel

Mr. Jayant Acharya has a long drawn experience spanning more than 24 years in the Steel Industry.  A Chemical Engineer with a Masters in Physics and an MBA with specialisation in Marketing, is a seasoned Steel Professional having successfully traversed through the highs and lows of the Steel Industry.

He has been involved in various strategic initiatives within the Organisation, structured start-up operations, developed and executed strategies for penetrating new markets and customers and brought in a strong Customer – Organisation relationship.

He has been with JSW Steel Ltd. for about 12 years and is currently on the Board as Director (Commercial & Marketing).  JSW Steel Ltd., as per World Steel Dynamics is currently ranked as the 2nd World Class Steel Producer.  At JSW Steel, he looks after the Sales & Marketing, Bulk Raw Material Procurement and Shipping functions and is associated in functioning of some of the subsidiary companies.  He also oversees the Joint Ventures, JSW Severfield Structures Ltd and JSW SMD Ltd., which are in the business of High-Rise Structural Steel Engineering.

Mr V R Sharma

Mr V R Sharma is CEO & Dy. MD (Steel Business). He has done his BE (Mechanical) and MBA (Marketing) from UK in the year 1983 & 1987 respectively and has rich experience of 27 years globally in the Steel industry with various organizations.

Mr Sharma started his career with Arrasate Steel SPA, Spain as Project Engineer. Subsequently he worked with Steel majors like Socialist Steel Ltd Libya, Lloyd Steel Group Company Sipta / Comet Steel, ISPAT Industries Ltd and Bhushan Power & Steel Limited.

Some of his major stints include his 10 years long stint with Bhushan Steel (1994 – 2004) where he worked as Whole Time Director cum Executive Director before moving on to work with Ispat Industries as Executive Director (Corporate). Prior to joining JSPL, he was working with Bhushan Power & Steel Limited as Joint Managing Director.

Mr Sharma has played a key role in managing large Greenfield Projects and expansions and driving the growth of the organizations through mergers and acquisitions, creating large business opportunities leading to exponential growth in marketing and operations in global scenario.    Mr. V R Sharma is also the Chairman of India Lead Zinc Development Association, New Delhi.

Dr. Amit Chatterjee

Tata Steel Ltd

Graduated in Met. Engg. from Banaras Hindu University, India before obtaining his Ph.D. and D.I.C.(Met) degrees from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. He then worked for two years in Thyssen, Germany, before joining Tata Steel in mid-1972. In Tata Steel, he has worked in many areas, but his perhaps best known for his contribution to R&D.

Dr. Chatterjee was awarded the Doctor of Science (Engg), by the University of London in 1988 for his outstanding work on coal-based direct reduction and oxygen steelmaking.  His host of honours includes the National Metallurgist Award (Govt. of India), The Sydney Gilchrist Thomas Medal (IOM3), Application to Practice Award (TMS), Tata Gold Medal (Indian Institute of Metals), Distinguished Metallurgist Award (Institution of Engineers), Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award (Wharton and Infosys), and the Platinum Medal (the highest Award given by the Indian Institute of Metals).

He is a Fellow of The Institute of Materials, England, The Indian Institute of Metals, India, The Indian National Academy of Engineers, India, and of Imperial College, London. He is a Chartered Engineer of The Engineering Council, England. Dr Chatterjee has been mentioned as one of the ‘Illustrious Alumni of Imperial College’ in its booklet ‘Imperial College, London – 100 Years of Living Science’.

He has over 500 publications to his credit. He is also the author of several books on Iron and Steel, published by international publishers. What is most significant is that Loyola School where he did his schooling for his Senior Cambridge, Banaras Hindu University where he completed his Engineering graduation and Imperial College where he undertook research for his Ph.D. have all recognised him as one of their Outstanding Alumini. Besides technical excellence, Amit Chatterjee is known for his passion for Theatre. He has acted and directed many plays including musicals like “The Sound of Music”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, etc.

Prior to joining Kalyani Steels Ltd., Mr. Goyal was working as Director -Strategy and Corporate Affairs of JSL Stainless Ltd, and was responsible for overall growth strategy formulation, mining business, strategic alliances, of all companies  in the Group.

Mr Dilip Oommen

Mr Viresh Oberoi

Viresh joined TATA Steel in 1978 as a Sales Trainee. The next twenty years saw Viresh crisscross the country handling sales of diverse product groups…managing distribution channels, building relationships with key accounts…In 1994 he was appointed the youngest Chief Sales Manager of Tata Steel.

In 1998 when the company decided to re-engineer their core market facing processes, Viresh was selected to head the cross functional team and was given the mandate to do so. This one year exercise carried out in association with consultants Arthur D. Little and IBM Global Services led to the implementation of SAP in Tata Steel for which Viresh was the Project Manager. The launch of coaljunction eliminated the middleman and terminated the coal mafia.  However, more was to come with the launch of buyjunction, autojunction, straightline, mjunctionedge…which then necessitated the company to change its name from metaljunction to mjunction. The value transacted by mjunction in 2009-10 was Rs 19,648 crores (USD 4.5 billion).

Mr Gerard McCloskey is the chairman of Merlin Trade and Consultancy having been for the last 30 years, the founder of The McCloskey Group, which specialises in news, data and analysis on the international coal markets. McCloskey has been accepted for two decades as a world authority on his subject area and has advised numerous banks, power, steel and coal companies globally as well as addressing European and British parliamentary assemblies and specialist committees.

Mr McCloskey studied economics at the London School of Economics in its distant disruptive period of the 1960s before working as a journalist - initially in the UK’s Midlands and West Country. He then joined the department of energy as press advisor to a series of ministers in the late Jim Callaghan government (Tony Benn) or early Margaret Thatcher governments (David Howell). Mr Steven Randall

Mr Steven Randall heads The Steel Index - the first independent price information service to provide verifiable steel, scrap and iron ore reference prices based on actual transactions.  Steven began work on the development of The Steel Index in November 2005 and launched the service in April 2006.

Prior to this, Steven was the Director of Strategy at Corus, the major European steel producer recently taken over by Tata Steel.  He was responsible for the Group’s corporate strategy and planning activities there for over four years.  It was during this period that he identified the need for independent verifiable steel price information and the valuable role this could play in offering the steel industry price risk management tools.

Steven started his career as a strategy consultant, working for over eleven years with Hatch Beddows (1988-2000).  There he specialised in steel industry strategy projects for clients in both Europe and North America.  Following this, he was the UK General Manager of Steelscreen, an independent metals e-marketplace, before joining Corus in 2001.

Steven holds an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University.

Mr John Johnson

Mr John Johnson joined CRU in September 1989. Between 1989 and 1994 he was a consultant in non-ferrous metals.  In 1994 he became Research Manager of the Steel team, and was promoted to Steel Group Business Unit Manager in 2003, with responsibility for all regular products covering steel and steelmaking raw materials. In 2000, Mr Johnson was responsible for developing the CRU steel price index (www.CRUspi.com), which has now become a leading global benchmark for steel pricing. In 2004, after spending ten years researching the steel industry, Mr Johnson was appointed as CRU’s Manager in China, responsible for CRU Group affairs. He has been located in Beijing since April 2004, where he has opened and expanded CRU’s China Representative office. Mr Johnson has now gained extensive experience in China, where he has continued to build relations with all leading Chinese metals companies, industry associations and government departments, as well as managing and contributing to local research and consultancy projects in ferrous and non ferrous metals.  He regularly presents on the Chinese economy.  He is learning Mandarin and currently manages a growing Beijing office of 21 full-time Chinese nationals and expats.

After graduating in Economics from University of Northumbria in 1984, Francis joined Mitsui & Co Ltd in London. In 1987 he joined Eurosteel, the European trading arm of international steel traders Stemcor and specialized in trading flat rolled products. German trading company Coutinho Caro & Co asked him to head their re-opened London office in 1991 and in 1993 he headed a management buyout of the London office, eventually selling his interest to his partners who wished to concentrate on UK steel stockholding. In 1995, he joined Steel & Metal Products the London trading office for German trading group Ferrostaal AG, where he continued to trade all steel products internationally.

In 2002 Francis joined Geesink Norba Group to develop trading in recovered and recycled materials.

Dr Bristow has been actively involved in the steel and steelmaking raw materials industries for over 22 years.  During this time he has led numerous investigations in coal and iron ore technical and market research, minerals strategy development and market planning for BHP’s Coal business and was Chief Analyst for BHP Billiton’s Carbon Steel Materials group leading the Market Intelligence group in Singapore.  Prior to this he held various positions in BHP’s Marketing group in the US and Australia, including Practice Leader Market Analysis for Coal and Iron Ore, Strategic Marketing for Coal and several years in the raw materials research laboratories at Newcastle: he was also been Australia’s representative on the international ISO iron ore Standards committees for physical testing for both conventional ores and DRI.

Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka is a Chartered Accountant with an all India 1st rank and a gold medallist. He has an industrial experience of more than a decade in production of coke and coal, besides a prior experience in management consultancy and merchant banking.

Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka is the Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat NRE Coke Limited. Under his able guidance, Gujarat NRE Coke, established in 1994, has become the largest independent producer of Met Coke in India – the only Indian entity to own and operate coking coal mine overseas thereby moving backward into coal mining in Australia and forward into steel making, coupled with wind energy and waste heat power generation in India.

A visionary of rare distinction, he has spearheaded the move by establishing Gujarat NRE Coking Coal Ltd. in 2004, a company involved in mining operations in Australia. Gujarat NRE Coking Coal Ltd. owns and operates NRE No. 1 colliery and NRE Wongawilli Colliery in Wollongong currently.  In a space of just a few years, the Company under his chairmanship has acquired world class hard coking coal resources in excess of 500 million tonnes.

He is also on various Boards like Port Kembla Coal Terminal, Wollongong Hawks and Executive Committee Member of NSW Minerals Council etc.

Mr. Jagatramka has been appointed Honorary NSW “Sydney Ambassador” to India by the Govt. of New South Wales, Australia. He is a member of the New South Wales-Asia Business Council under the Department of State and Regional Development and an active member of Confederation of Indian Industry. Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka has recently been conferred the prestigious “Person of the Year 2009” title by Illawarra Mercury, a leading Australian publication.
