Hon. Mr Peter Varghese, The Australian High Commissioner to India
Peter Varghese took up his position as Australian High Commissioner to India in August 2009.
Prior to his posting he was for five and half years the Director General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA) in Canberra. This is a Secretary-level statutory office reporting directly to the Australian Prime Minister. ONA provides the Prime Minister and the National Security Committee of Cabinet with assessments of international political, strategic and economic developments affecting Australia’s national interests. It is also responsible for coordinating and evaluating Australia’s foreign intelligence activities.
From June to December 2003 Mr Varghese worked in the Prime Minister’s personal office as the senior foreign and defence policy adviser to then Prime Minister John Howard.
Mr Varghese is a career officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade which he joined in 1979. He has served in Vienna (1980-83), Washington (1985-88), as Minister (Political) in Tokyo (1994) and as High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-2002).
In Canberra, Mr Varghese has held a wide range of positions, including Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (2003) and several stints working on disarmament and arms control issues. In 1996 and 1997 he led the drafting team which produced Australia’s first ever White Paper on foreign affairs and trade. Mr Varghese also headed the department’s personnel branch (1991-2). From 1998-99 he was seconded to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as head of the international division.
Mr Varghese was born in Kenya in 1956 to Kerala-born parents who went to teach in Kenya soon after they married. He migrated to Australia as a young child. Mr Varghese went to school in Brisbane and is a graduate and university medalist in History from the University of Queensland. He is married to Margaret, who is on leave from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. They have one adult son.

Dr J J Irani, Tata Sons
Dr. Irani obtained a degree in M.Sc. (Geology) from Nagpur University in 1958. M.Met. in 1960 and Ph.D. in 1963 from the University of Sheffield, U.K. He began his career in 1963 as a Senior Scientific Officer at the BISRA, Sheffield where he rose to the position of Head, Physical Metallurgy Division. On return to India in 1968 he joined The Tata Iron and Steel Company Ltd. (TISCO), now Tata Steel, as Assistant to Director, Research & Development, whereafter he was appointed General Superintendent in 1978, General Manager in 1979, President in 1985 and Managing Director in 1992. After holding the CEO's office for almost a decade, he retired as Managing Director of Tata Steel in 2001. Presently, he continues to be a Director on the Board of Tata Steel.
Dr. Irani is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) Government of India. He is a member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). He was Chairman of the Expert Committee set up by the Government to draft the new Companies Act, and was a member of the Expert Committee set up by the Government for recommending a roadmap for the Coal Sector in India. He was also involved in the working groups for Iron and Steel for the 6th, 7th and 8th National Five-Year Plans. He was a member of the Duke of Edinburgh Conference in 1980 (held in Canada).
Besides Tata Steel, Dr. Irani is a Director on the Boards of several Corporates including Tata Sons Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., BOC (India) Ltd., Electrosteel Castings Ltd., Repro India Ltd. He is Chairman of Tata Refractories Ltd., TRF Ltd. and Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd. He is a Member of the Advisory Council of Citigroup India and of the Advisory Committee of NICCO group. He was a Director of the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India, and was also on the Boards of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and IDBI Bank.
In 1993, the University of Sheffield conferred upon him the Honorary Degree of “Doctor of Metallurgy”, and in 2004 The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) conferred on him the Degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa. The Royal Academy of Engineering, London, at its Annual General Body Meeting held on 10th July 1996, elected Dr. Irani as a Foreign Member and he is amongst the few Indians who have been bestowed with this honour.
The Ministry of Steel and Mines awarded him the Metallurgist of the Year Award in 1974, and the inaugural National Metallurgist Award in 1997 for his extraordinary achievements in the field of metallurgical industry. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award 2008 instituted by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He is the recipient of “Steel Man of the Year 1990” award, Asian Productivity Medal 1993-94, the Indian Institute of Metals’ prestigious “Platinum Medal” in 1988 (this medal is the highest award given by the IIM for outstanding contributions made to the metallurgical profession and industry; the Qimpro Platinum Standard in 2000, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber’s Juran Quality Medal for the year 2001 (for his role as a statesman for quality), the Ernst & Young’s Lifetime Achievement Award, 2001 (for entrepreneurial success), the All India Management Association’s Eighth JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award in 2003, the ICSI Life Time Achievement Award in 2006 (for translating excellence in Corporate Governance into reality). and Indian National Academy of Engineering’s Life Time Contribution Award in Engineering in 2002. He is the recipient of the Twelfth Willy Korf Steel Vision Award instituted by The World Steel Dynamics and American Metal Market.
In 1997, Queen Elizabeth II conferred on him a honorary Knighthood (KBE), for his contributions to Indo-British Trade and Co-operation.
In 2007 he was honoured by the President of India who conferred on him the award of “Padma Bhushan” for his services to Trade and Industry in the country.

Mr S K Roongta, Chairman, SAIL
Mr. S. K. Roongta is Chairman, SAIL since August 2006. An engineering graduate from BITS, Pilani and a PG Diploma in International Trade from IIFT, New Delhi, Mr. Roongta started his career in 1972 as a marketing executive in SAIL.
Mr. Roongta is also the first Chairman of International Coal Ventures Limited (ICVL) – a JV of five leading PSUs.
He is a member of various Apex Chambers - Chairman of ‘Steel Committee’ of FICCI, member of National Council of CII and Advisory Council of ASSOCHAM. Mr. Roongta is also President of Institute for Steel Development & Growth.
Mr. Roongta is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Steel Association - the Apex Body for formulation of policy for world steel. He is the only CEO from India in this committee.
Mr. Roongta is the recipient of a number of awards including SCOPE Award for Excellence & Outstanding Contribution to the Public Sector Management – Individual Category 2007-08.
Under Mr. Roongta’s leadership, SAIL has achieved new landmarks in physical and financial performance. Operating at 115% of its rated capacity, it has posted a PBT of over Rs. 9,400 crores in FY’09. Its net profit of Rs. 2,813 cr. (US $ 570 million) during H1’09 was the highest among all steel producers in the world.
Under his leadership, SAIL is also implementing its growth plan to almost double its capacity to over 26 million tonnes of hot metal, in the next 3-4 years.

Mr Partha S Bhattacharya, Chairman, CIL
Shri Bhattacharyya, a post graduate in Physics from Jadavpur University and FICWA is Chairman of CIL since Oct 2006. In his tenure, CIL has grown from strength to strength. Coal production increased from 343 mill t in FY 2006 to 404 mill t in FY 2009. He has spearheaded a number of major strategic ppp initiatives for opening new large underground mines, reopening abandoned UG mines, coal washeries etc. He introduced Integrity Pact in high value procurements and also monitoring of Land reclamation in Opencast mines using Satellite imagery. CIL got Miniratna in Mar 07 and Navaratna in Oct 2008. In Jan 2009, Shri Bhattacharyya successfully concluded year-long wage negotiation for 500,000 coal workers without loss of a single day of work. On October 15, 2009, he received, on behalf of CIL, the coveted ‘Scope Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to the Public Sector Management – Institutional Category 2007-08, from the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
As CMD of BCCL since Nov 2003, he brought this perennially loss making company into profits exceeding Rs.200 crores in 2005-06. The turnaround of the company has sustained since then. He also introduced e-marketing of coal, later adopted by all coal companies, that provides transparent access to coal for all consumers and enables CIL to internalize premium exceeding Rs.2000 crores annually which, earlier was mopped up by middlemen.
As Dir (F), WCL since Aug 2001, he introduced Group Gratuity scheme, later adopted by other coal companies leading to substantial tax savings for the company and additional social security to employees.
In mid nineties, he developed a Financial Model for the company that was successfully used to secure approval of GOI to Capital Restructuring in 1996 and World Bank/JBIC loan of 1.06 bill $ that paved the way for emergence of CIL as a large profit making, tax and dividend paying PSE in the country. He introduced an advanced system for managing currency risks that is yielding substantial benefits for over a decade.
Shri Bhattacharyya completed with distinction an eight week program at Harvard University in 1990, a two week Euromoney training at Surrey UK in 1998 and two week AMP at Cambridge University in 2006. He is a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Sciences.

Mr Peter Marcus, Founder and Managing Partner, World Steel Dynamics
Peter F. Marcus, Managing Partner of World Steel Dynamics Inc., is the founder of the World Steel Dynamics (WSD) information service. He is a steel industry economist, a consultant and a security analyst. He has worked with steel companies the world over on a wide variety of assignments over the years including steel company and facility competitive assessments, merger and acquisition strategies, strategic positioning, public offerings and road show presentations. He also works closely with investment banking groups and institutional equity and high yield investors.
Mr. Marcus graduated in 1960 with honors in economics from Cornell University and received an M.B.A. in investments and economics from New York University in 1965.
Mr. Marcus began his career on Wall Street in 1961 as a steel analyst with L. F. Rothschild & Co. He then joined Mitchell Hutchins & Co. in 1971. World Steel Dynamics was founded in 1975 as a division of the research department at Mitchell Hutchins (which became part of PaineWebber in 1977).
In early 1999, Mr. Marcus left PaineWebber after 28 years to take forward World Steel Dynamics as a separate and independent entity.
WSD’s trademark is breakthrough studies and action-oriented reports on the steel industry. Among other things, it seeks to forecast how the “pricing power” of steel companies the world over will be influenced by changes in the structure of the industry.

He has received much recognition over the years for his research efforts, including being selected six times as the leading steel analyst by Institutional Investor magazine in its annual “All Star” survey.
Mr. Marcus founded with the AMM (American Metal Market, the leading U.S. daily metals newspaper) the annual “Steel Survival Strategies” conference, now known as “Steel Success Strategies”.

Dr Rod Beddows, CEO, Hatch Corporate Finance
Rod is CEO of Hatch Corporate Finance; a major metals and mining dedicated corporate finance boutique; controlled by the Hatch Group. Rod has been a director of the Hatch Group and Chairman of their Strategy Consulting Practice. Rod joined the Hatch Group in 1998 following the sale to Hatch of Beddows & Co, a strategy consultancy he founded in 1987. Rod is a respected source of view on the future of the metals industry, especially the steel sector. Rod is on the Board of ZincOx Resources PLC.

Mr. John Kearsey, Head, SSY Consultancy & Research
John Kearsey is the Head of Research at Simpson, Spence & Young (SSY), one of the world’s largest ship broking organisations. SSY has offices in 17 locations around the world including Mumbai, where SSY India opened in July 2007 to focus on tanker and dry bulk chartering. Mr Kearsey co-ordinates SSY’s analysis and forecasting of the shipping markets, which specialises in cargo trade flows. Mr Kearsey began his career in the shipping industry in 1983 with Lloyd’s Shipping Economist. He has spoken at a number of steel industry events in Europe and Asia.

Chairman & Managing Director of the Dempo Group of Companies. Ms Vicky Binns, Head of Commodity Analysis, BHP Billiton
Vicky Binns is Vice President – Head of Commodity Analysis, for BHP Billiton. Based in Singapore, she leads BHP Billiton’s marketing analyst team across the range of commodities and the economists in China and India.
Prior to joining BHP Billiton in March 2009, Vicky was Australian Head of Research and Global Head of Mining, Metals and Steel Research for Merrill Lynch where the team was consistently rated Top 3. Vicky was an analyst in the financial markets for 15 years. She has covered companies with diverse assets including base metals, Platinum Group Metals, alumina, coal, iron ore, industrial minerals, oil and gas, and uranium. Prior to working in the financial services sector, Vicky worked with Exxon as a Petroleum Engineer and Oil trader, and previously in the mining industry.

Mr Gueorgui Pirinski, Global Steel Analyst, BHP Billiton
Gueorgui Pirinski is BHP Billiton’ Global Steel Analyst. Based in Singapore, he supports strategy development for the Carbon Steel Materials division by analysing and forecasting cyclical and structural supply/demand trends, trade flows, and mill profitability.
Prior to joining BHP Billiton in November 2006, Gueorgui was Senior Consultant with CRU International, the leading metals & mining research provider, where he covered stainless steel and was Editor of some of the sector’s most widely circulated publications. Gueorgui’s steel industry experience dates back to 2001, when we started working on a series of projects to restore the viability, restructure and facilitate the privatisation of steel mills in Eastern Europe, which was completed when the largest ones were acquired by Mittal Steel.

Mr Gerard McCloskey, Founder and Chairman, McCloskey Group
Gerard McCloskey is the chairman and founder of The McCloskey Group, which specialises in news, data and analysis on the international coal markets. The group has an extensive publication and consultancy divisions and organises conferences throughout the world. McCloskey has been accepted for two decades as a world authority on his subject area and has advised numerous banks, power, steel and coal companies globally as well as addressing European and British parliamentary assemblies and specialist committees.
McCloskey studied economics at the London School of Economics in its distant disruptive period of the 1960s before working as a journalist - initially in the UK’s Midlands and West Country before joining the department of energy as press advisor to a series of ministers in the late Jim Callaghan government (Tony Benn) or early Margaret Thatcher governments (David Howell). He then decided to return to journalism and was recruited to the Financial Times to run their growing number of newsletters.
In 1987 the first of the McCloskey Group Companies – McCloskey Coal Information Services Ltd - was established, initially working with the Financial Times before breaking with them at the end of December 2000, having by that time been editor of International Coal Report for 20 years.
The McCloskey Group now publishes five regular coal newsletters, including the industry leader McCloskey Coal Report, and stages 14 annual conferences around the world and is planning extension in both these and all the company’s other activities.

Mr Bill Graybeal, CEO, Coeclerici Asia (Pte) Ltd
Bill Graybeal has over 25 years of in-depth experience within the international coal, metallurgical raw materials and petroleum by-product industries, having previously held senior positions with major multinationals such as; Stinnes International, and the Phibro division of Salomon Inc. Mr Calum Baker, Head Steel and Steel Making Raw Materials, CRU
Calum joined CRU in January 2005. Initially working for the group’s management consulting arm, CRU Strategies, he worked on projects covering the full range of commodities and geographies. Calum took up his current position as Research Manager for raw materials in CRU’s Steel Team in 2006. He is responsible for the management of the team covering steelmaking raw materials, including iron ore, metallurgical coal and coke, ferrous metallics and carbon steel ferroalloys. Prior to working at CRU, Calum worked as a mining consultant and research scientist. He holds a BSc in geophysics from the University of Edinburgh and has a PhD and MBA from Cambridge University.

Ms Annalisa Jeffries, Metal Analyst, Platts
Annalisa Jeffries is a metals analyst for Platts, Mcgraw-Hill. Annalisa has spent the last ten years working as an analyst in the oil, petrochemical and metals departments within Platts. Between 1999-2002 Annalisa worked as European Managing editor Petrochemicals at Platts in London. From 2002-2006 Annalisa was Managing Editor of the European products, oil and shipping teams. Annalisa moved to India, 18 months ago, and is working as an analyst covering the Asian iron ore markets. Prior to working at Platts, Ms Jeffries worked at ICIS LOR as a price reporter in petrochemicals in both Europe and the US. Annalisa graduated from Leeds University in 1991 with a BSc in Food Science/Chemistry, and in 2008 with a foundation degree in Crime scene investigation. Platts is a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, with a century of business experience, Platts serves customers across more than 150 countries. From 14 offices worldwide, Platts serves the oil, natural gas, electricity, nuclear power, coal, petrochemical and metals markets.

Mr P K Mukherjee, MD, Sesa Goa
Mr. P.K. Mukherjee is Managing Director or CEO of Sesa Goa Ltd., India’s largest Private Sector Exporter of Iron ore.
He joined Sesa 22 years ago i.e. in 1987 as Manager-Internal Audit and handled assignments in the capacities of Sr. Manager-Corporate Affairs & Taxation, General Manager-Finance & Accounts, General Manager - Management Systems & Audit, before being elevated to Board Level.
Before joining SESA, he started his career with Bridge and Roof Co. (I) Ltd. a government of India Engg. & Construction Company for nearly four years and later with Ceat Tyres for about five years.
In a nutshell, he has a rich experience of more than a quarter century holding positions at different levels in different corporate set-ups.
He is a Fellow member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India & Associate Member of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India.
Mr. Mukherjee is the Chairperson of Mineral Foundation of Goa, a non-profit organization, which is primarly engaged in socio-economic development activities. He is also the Executive Member of Trade Association and Chamber of Commerce.
He is a sought after representative for various trade delegations not only as a delegate but also as a speaker. He has not only attended various seminars and conferences in India and abroad but also participated as speaker. He was also an External Faculty of Goa University for Post graduation course in one semester.
His major achievement came along with his appointment as the CEO of Sesa Goa Ltd. By his appointment as CEO of India’s largest Private sector iron ore company, he became the first Indian National to be at the helm of affairs at Sesa Group.
Rated as one of India’s Best Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) in the year 2005 by Business Today Magazine, he is one of the sharpest minds in Corporate India’s storm troopers and dreams of unfurling the National Flag in distant economies with dedicated hard work so that India may reclaim her rightful place in the powerhouse. He has a series of first to his credit, both personally and as the guiding spirit of Sesa Goa Ltd. and has been decorated by various organizations for his clear vision and path breaking successes.
Outside of professional interests, he travels widely, reads, writes, and listens to Indian classical music, sports lover - especially football and cricket. Mr. Mukherjee is happily married and is blessed with two sons.

Dr Amit Chatterjee, Advisor, Tata Steel
Dr. Amit Chatterjee (61) is Adviser to the MD, Tata Steel. He graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1966 and obtained his Ph.D. and D.I.C.(Met) degrees from the very well known Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in 1970. He then worked for two years in Thyssen, Germany, before he joined Tata Steel in mid 1972. He rose to the post of Jt.Director, R & D and in 1982, was ‘Seconded’ by Tata Steel to Ipitata Sponge Iron Limited for 5 years as its Managing Director. Ipitata was based on the Tisco Direct Reduction (TDR) process developed through Dr. Chatterjee’s sustained efforts spanning two decades.
Dr.Chatterjee was awarded the Doctor of Science (Engg), by the University of London in 1988 for his outstanding work on coal based direct reduction and oxygen steelmaking. He has received several honours, including the National Metallurgist Award in 1977, Visvesvaraya Gold Medal in 1980-81, SAIL Gold Medal in 1982, Bhoruka Gold Medal in 1992, The Sydney Gilchrist Thomas Medal of the Institute of Materials, London in 1994, Visvesvaraya Gold Medal in 1996, Application to Practice Award of TMS (USA) for 1997, Distinguished Alumnus Award of Banaras Hindu University, Tata Gold Medal, Distinguished Metallurgist Award for the year 2000 by The Institution of Engineers (India), and the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award in 2002. His last award was the highest award of the Indian Institute of Metals – the Platinum Medal for the year 2002. He has also received a Special Award for Exemplary Contribution to Tata Search from Mr Ratan Tata. Dr Chatterjee was bestowed the Life Time Achievement Award by The Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers in January 2002, for his work in the field of mineral beneficiation.
He is a Fellow of The Institute of Materials, England, a Fellow of The Indian Institute of Metals, India, a Fellow of The Indian National Academy of Engineers, India, a Fellow of Imperial College, London, and a Chartered Engineer of The Engineering Council, England.
Dr.Chatterjee has over 495 publications to his credit. He is the author of the highly acclaimed book entitled ‘Beyond the Blast Furnace’ which was published by CRC Press, USA, in 1993. He has authored another book entitled “Metallics for Steelmaking -- Production and Use” published by Allied Publishers Ltd.

Mr Sandeep Biswas, Managing Partner, Accenture's Resources Operating Group, India
Sandeep Biswas is the Managing Partner of Accenture’s Resources Operating Group in India. Sandeep has worked extensively in the metals industry in India and Europe. Sandeep’s experience includes strategic planning, organization and governance, and large scale organizational change.
He has been involved in a significant global merger in the steel industry and has worked on global operating models for steel companies. Sandeep has also worked extensively in the oil & gas industry and in particular has led teams involved in helping the set up of large capital projects worth billions of dollars.
Sandeep has a Master’s degree in Business Administration specializing in Finance and a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka, CMD, Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd
Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka is the Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat NRE Coke Limited. Under his able guidance, Gujarat NRE Coke, established in 1994, has become the largest independent producer of Met Coke in India – the only Indian entity to have moved backward into coal mine ownership in Australia and forward into steel making, coupled with wind energy and waste heat power generation. A visionary of rare distinction, he has spearheaded the move by establishing Gujarat NRE Minerals Ltd. in 2004, a company involved in mining operations in Australia. Gujarat NRE Minerals Ltd owns and operates NRE No. 1 colliery and NRE Wongawilli Colliery in Wollongong currently. Mr. Arun Kumar Jagatramka is a member of a number of boards, like Pike River Coal Ltd, New Zealand, where Gujarat NRE group holds cornerstone stakes. He is also on the Boards of Port Kembla Coal Terminal, Australian Coal Research Ltd, Wollongong ahm Hawks and Executive Committee Member of NSW Minerals Council.
Mr. Jagatramka has been appointed as an Honorary NSW “Sydney Ambassador” to India by the Govt. of New South Wales, Australia. He is a member of the New South Wales-Asia Business Council under the department of State and Regional Development and an active member of Confederation of Indian Industry.
